Patient society strategy

  • National Osteoporosis Society Manifestos: The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) published Manifestos for each of the four nations of the United Kingdom. The NOS Manifestos focus on five key areas, each with a specific call to action:

1.The management of falls, fragility fractures and osteoporosis
(NOS) want a Fracture Liaison Service linked to every hospital that receives fragility fractures in the UK, to ensure that every fragility fracture patient gets the treatment and care they need.

    2.Clinical guidance
(NOS) want coherent clinical guidance for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care of falls, fragility fractures and osteoporosis.

    3.Assessing clinical performance
(NOS) want the quality and systems of care for people at risk of falls, and with, or at risk of, fragility fractures and osteoporosis to be measured on a regular basis, to stimulate best practice.

4.The indicators that influence primary care
(NOS) want healthcare professionals working in primary care to be offered meaningful financial incentives to find and treat those at a high risk of fragility fracture.

    5.Public awareness and education
(NOS) want measures to improve understanding of bone health amongst individuals of all ages, with positive messages communicated in schools.

  • National Osteoporosis Society Fracture Liaison Services Campaign: The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) has supported a range of programs calling for universal access to Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) across the UK. During autumn 2010, the NOS, supported by the Department of Health in England with sponsorship from Amgen, Novartis and Servier, led a series of FLS learning events across England and Wales. The events included presentations from Lead Clinicians that have developed successful FLS models and service commissioners responsible for successful funding bids. Workshop sessions supported participants to consider how to successfully develop FLS in localities currently lacking a service

The Breaking Point Report provided a snapshot of the current situation for women with osteoporosis in the UK.

Breaking Point described the practical steps that must be taken by healthcare professionals, policy makers and commissioners, as well as the public to prevent avoidable suffering and cost of osteoporotic fractures.
